A Full Moon Ceremony, Honoring Dr Martin Luther King Jr & Thich Nhat Hanh’s Beloved Community Friendship- May 31st, 6:00PM EST - 7:00PM EST

There are moments within humanity’s EVOLutionary journey that steer us towards greater peace, greater courage,and a felt sense of what it means to embody Beloved Community.  These moments are guideposts for navigating the uncharted terrain before us…rooting us into the heart of what it means to be true peace builders and arc benders. 

May 31st, 1966 is one such moment. A moment in which the world witnessed two of the greatest Spiritual leaders of our time uniting in a shared vision of peace while their nations were at war with one another.

A. J. Muste, working on behalf of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, arranged a meeting between Thich Nhat Hanh and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Chicago on May 31, 1966. They conferred privately for some time, discussing the latest crises in Vietnam, and then held a joint press conference…

Their joint statement at this momentous moment read:

“…We also believe that the struggles for equality and freedom in Birmingham, Selma and Chicago, as in Hue, Danang and Saigon, are aimed not at the domination of one people by another. They are aimed at self-determination, peaceful social change, and a better life for all human beings. And we believe that only in a world of peace can the work of construction, of building good societies everywhere, go forward.”

Now Ancestors, Dr. King and Thich Nhat Hanh’s words ring out as a clarion call for all who have “ears to hear” and a willingness to heed their invitation to continue the legacy of building the Beloved Community as a remedy for the dis-ease of violence that plagues humanity.
